What we didn't account for was the time and energy this transition would incur and how that would impact our collective presence here at WWG. Eventually working and consulting with Sony, Valve, Oculus and others, we found ourselves on the front step of a completely new, emergent industry. The simple truth is that we had no idea just how involved and crazy things would get at Cloudhead Games. That eventually led to the creation of Cloudhead Games LTD in late 2012 and a (at the time) crazy notion to begin development on a game "made for virtual reality", for prototype hardware.
Having a young family I made a tough call to put my focus in an industry that had a stronger foundation. In late 2012 myself and others here, diverted into videogame development. This had a significant impact on WWG in general and our ability to move forward with papercraft terrain. Unfortunately, for many reasons, the product did not find its audience and WWG's efforts were largely wasted. We made a strong push with 5 products in the line and it was sent to stores globally. WWG invested a solid year in developing that product line, engineering it and designing everything from the components themselves to the art, the packaging and the branding. When we were given the opportunity to work on TerraClips with Wyrd Minatures, it was seen as a terrific potential way to broaden our reach into a tangible market. WWG represented a collective of designers, working in part-time and bit-work capacities to move the medium forward. As a papercraft terrain designer, you are in a rare position indeed if you can make a full-time go out of the market and frequent releases are key. This has always been an extremely niche industry with a number of barriers to entry. As a collection, our catalog did well in those early years but as competition increased, prices were driven down, file sharing became more pervasive, and the D&D market began its slump, the market became increasingly challenging. We built an amazing variety of innovative products over the past 10 years and by and large it was done for the love of the craft and for a community of enthusiastic collectors. I suppose the best way to start is to frame the papercraft terrain industry in general. And you have been rightly frustrated by the lack of communication.
Many of you have been asking for an update regarding WWG's future.
I know that TheAuldGrump was part of that community a lot longer than I was, so perhaps if he knows more about the situation, he might chime in with some actual details.Įdit: Their products are no longer listed on DriveThuRPG / RPGNow although you can still download them via your account page if you already purchased them there. but it seems wise to take preventative measures now, if you can. Of course, WWG might still be making enough money to cover the server costs and Denny might yet renew. Considering the lack of activity from Denny and the gang over the last year, I think there is a reasonable chance that he will simply let the domain lapse and with it, the forum and access to your purchases could disappear, especially if the server is provided as part of a hosted service along with the domain name. If you're new & excited try a text post and ask questions to start a discussion. This is very much a rumour rather than a piece of news, but if you have ever purchased any of the print and build terrain from WorldWorksGames such as their TLX or SwiftScenics range, you should probably log in to the website and make sure you have everything downloaded by the end of the month.ĭue to the lack of new releases, I haven't visited the site much but by luck I swung by the forum yesterday and some of the community members were discussing the fact that the domain name is going to expire on November 4th, 2014. No "Look what I bought" posts consisting of sprues or boxes. There will be NO holy wars against other games/subs. NO personal information or inflammatory posting. Please keep posts related to Wyrd products (Malifaux, puppet wars, EBO, Through the breach etc.) this is the Malifaux / wyrd subreddit there are more appropriate places for other companies products.
